GTA 6 vs GTA 5

Last updated: July 2026

GTA 6 is the biggest generational leap in the series since GTA 5 launched in 2013. The confirmed differences are substantial: a new setting (Vice City in the state of Leonida instead of Los Santos), two protagonists instead of three, a six-star wanted system, a realistic weapon-carry limit, and a generational jump in graphics on current-gen-only hardware. One thing to be clear about up front: the popular “GTA 6 map is 2.5× bigger” figures are fan estimates, not official — Rockstar hasn’t released a map size. Here’s the full, honest comparison.

Setting & Map

The biggest change is where you play. GTA 5’s Los Santos and Blaine County was a California-inspired mix of city, desert, and mountains, built for 2013 hardware. GTA 6 returns to Vice City, Rockstar’s Miami stand-in, now inside the wider Florida-inspired state of Leonida — with confirmed regions like the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers wetlands, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.

On map size: community mapping projects estimate GTA 6’s world at roughly 2.1–2.7× larger than GTA 5’s (GTA 5 is about 49 km²; estimates put GTA 6 around 125+ km²). But Rockstar has not released an official figure, so treat any exact multiplier as an estimate, not a fact. What is clear from trailers is a huge jump in density and draw distance — the world looks far more detailed, not just bigger. See our GTA 6 Map page for the confirmed regions.

Protagonists & Story

GTA 5 followed three playable criminals — Michael, Franklin, and Trevor — whose stories intertwined. GTA 6 stars two: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, with Lucia the first female protagonist in a mainline GTA. Rather than three strangers, Jason and Lucia are a couple — a Bonnie-and-Clyde partnership at the heart of the story. You still switch between protagonists, but the design leans into playing them as a duo. Meet them on our Characters page.

Graphics & Technology

Because GTA 6 is current-gen only, it isn’t held back by last-gen hardware the way GTA 5 was in 2013. Confirmed upgrades include ray-traced lighting, strand-based hair physics, dynamic clothing and sweat, fully interactive vehicle interiors, and extreme draw distances. Both games run on Rockstar’s RAGE engine, but GTA 6 uses its latest, most advanced version. The result is a clear generational leap in lighting, texture detail, and animation — the kind of jump that defines a new console era.

Gameplay & Mechanics

Platforms & Release

GTA 5 launched in September 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360, later re-released across PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC over a decade. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only — there’s no PS4 or Xbox One version, and a PC release hasn’t been dated (expected later, following Rockstar’s console-first pattern). See our Is GTA 6 Coming to PC? page.

Online Mode

GTA 5’s biggest legacy is GTA Online, which grew for over a decade. GTA 6 is different at launch: Rockstar has confirmed it releases as a single-player experience, with no GTA Online-style mode dated for launch. An online mode is widely expected later, but nothing is confirmed yet.

Is GTA 6 Bigger and Better Than GTA 5?

By confirmed measures, GTA 6 is a clear step up: a broader, denser world, deeper mechanics, a more personal story, and a generational graphics leap on current-gen hardware. On raw map size, it’s very likely larger — fan estimates suggest 2–2.7× — but since Rockstar hasn’t published a number, “bigger” is best described as confirmed in scope and detail, with the exact size still an estimate until launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GTA 6 bigger than GTA 5?

Almost certainly, but the exact size isn't confirmed. Fan mapping estimates put GTA 6's world at roughly 2.1–2.7× GTA 5's, and trailers show a much denser, more detailed world — but Rockstar hasn't released an official map size.

How much bigger is the GTA 6 map than GTA 5?

Community estimates range from about 2.1× to 2.7× larger (GTA 5 is ~49 km²; GTA 6 is estimated around 125+ km²). These are fan projections, not official figures.

What's the biggest difference between GTA 5 and GTA 6?

The setting and scope: GTA 6 moves from GTA 5's Los Santos to a reimagined Vice City in the state of Leonida, with two protagonists instead of three and a generational leap in technology.

How many protagonists does GTA 6 have vs GTA 5?

GTA 5 had three (Michael, Franklin, Trevor); GTA 6 has two (Jason and Lucia), including the series' first female protagonist.

Is GTA 6 on the same consoles as GTA 5?

No. GTA 5 launched on PS3/Xbox 360 and spread across many platforms; GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, with no last-gen version and no dated PC release.

Does GTA 6 have GTA Online like GTA 5?

Not at launch. GTA 6 releases as a single-player experience with no GTA Online-style mode dated yet, whereas GTA 5's online mode launched shortly after the main game in 2013.
